Floor Coatings Over Existing Tile
Transform Outdated Tile Without the Cost, Dust and Disruption of Full Tile Removal
In many residential and commercial applications, suitable existing tile can be professionally prepared and transformed with a decorative coating system. Floor Grip Medic provides specialty coating-over-tile solutions throughout Northeast Florida.
You May Not Have to Tear Out Your Existing Tile
Traditional tile replacement can mean demolition, dust, debris, disposal costs and significant disruption.
When an existing tiled surface is sufficiently stable and suitable, Floor Grip Medic can professionally prepare it and install a decorative coating system over the existing tile.
The goal is to dramatically change the color and overall appearance of the surface while reducing the need for complete tile demolition.
This process does not turn an existing tiled floor into a perfectly flat, joint-free surface. The existing tile and grout profile remain part of the substrate beneath the finished coating.
- Residential tile floors
- Patios, lanais and porches
- Commercial facilities
- Clubhouses and HOA properties
- Retail and office spaces
- Restrooms and common areas
From Existing Tile to a Completely Different Look
The coating changes the color and overall character of the surface while the underlying tile and grout profile remain part of the finished floor.
Important: Existing Grout Lines Will Remain Visible
Floor Grip Medic does not fill or level all existing grout joints as part of our standard coating-over-tile system.
The coating is installed over the properly prepared tile and grout surface. Because the existing grout joints remain part of the substrate, the grout-line pattern and tile profile can remain visible through the finished coating.
The purpose of this service is to transform the color, finish and overall appearance of suitable existing tile while avoiding unnecessary demolition — not to create a completely flat or joint-free floor.
How We Approach Coating Over Tile
Coating over tile requires evaluation and preparation. It is not simply a matter of rolling coating over an existing tiled floor.
Inspect the Existing Tile
We evaluate the tile, grout joints, movement, adhesion and overall condition of the existing surface.
Prepare the Surface
The tile is professionally prepared to create the surface profile required for the selected coating system.
Address Qualifying Defects
Loose tile, damaged areas and other qualifying defects are evaluated and addressed where appropriate.
Install the Coating System
The selected decorative coating layers are installed over the properly prepared tile and grout surface.
Change the Look of Old Tile Without Starting From Scratch
Decorative flake systems can dramatically change the color and character of an outdated tiled patio, lanai or interior floor.
The tile and grout remain underneath the new coating, which means the existing grout-line profile remains visible.
- Decorative full-broadcast flake systems
- Multiple color combinations
- Exterior and interior options where appropriate
- Traction additives available for wet areas
- UV-stable exterior topcoat options
- Existing grout joints remain visible
A Practical Option for Commercial Properties
For commercial properties, tile demolition can mean dust, debris, dumpsters, disruption and downtime.
When the existing tile is suitable, coating over it may provide an alternative path to updating the space without automatically removing the entire tiled surface.
Existing grout lines remain visible in commercial applications as well. This is a coating system, not a self-leveling or grout-elimination system.
- HOA and community facilities
- Restaurants and hospitality spaces
- Retail stores and showrooms
- Office and commercial buildings
- Clubhouses and common areas

Coating Over Tile Project Gallery
These projects show different applications of decorative coatings over existing tiled surfaces.
Not Every Tile Floor Should Be Coated
The existing tile becomes part of the substrate underneath the new coating, so the condition of the existing tile matters.
Loose, hollow, moving, cracked or otherwise unstable tile may require repair or removal before a coating system can be recommended.
Moisture, movement and other substrate conditions must also be considered before installation.
We Evaluate the Surface First
Floor Grip Medic does not simply coat every tile floor. We evaluate the existing surface and determine whether coating over the tile is appropriate for that specific project.
If the existing tile is not a suitable substrate, we will explain the concern before recommending a coating system.
Coating Over Tile FAQs
Can you really coat over existing tile?
In many applications, yes. The tile must first be evaluated and properly prepared. The condition, stability and adhesion of the existing tile are important factors.
Will the grout lines still be visible?
Yes. Existing grout lines remain visible after coating. Floor Grip Medic does not fill or level all grout joints as part of our standard coating-over-tile system.
Does the coating make the floor completely flat?
No. This is not a leveling service. Existing grout joints, tile profile, elevation differences and other characteristics of the original tiled floor may remain visible.
Is this only for residential floors?
No. Coating over suitable tile can be considered for both residential and commercial applications.
What if some tiles are loose?
Loose, hollow or unstable tile must be addressed before the coating system is installed. The appropriate repair depends on the individual condition.
Can this be used outdoors?
Certain coating systems can be used on qualifying exterior tiled surfaces. UV exposure, moisture, drainage and traction must all be considered.
Does coating hide every imperfection?
No. Existing substrate characteristics may remain visible through the finished coating, especially grout lines, elevation differences and other surface irregularities.
Why coat instead of removing the tile?
When the existing tile is suitable, coating over it can reduce demolition, disposal, dust and disruption while dramatically changing the finished appearance.
